Often, people are curious about the connection. Ziegler worked collaboratively with William Morris, taking his designs into (formerly Persia) and securing weavers in and to produce fine examples of traditionally made carpets produced explicitly for the export market booming . The processes were developed at the weaving stage, extending into finishing, particularly the herbal washes used. The fashion was to experiment, and the early Ziegler designs were quite different from this period's traditional rugs and carpets. The Oriental rug trade had not been used in this way before. In many ways, the pioneering techniques used by Ziegler & Co. have been part of the inspiration behind some of the newly designed pieces from Afghan weavers, like the Samarkand and Mamluks.

The rug is scrubbed with brushes with tough bristles, enabling surplus dyes to be removed and making them much lighter in colour.
